【Production Talk】The Operation - Waltz of the Witch

I think creation is always accompanied by ideas, so I decided to start a new column specifically to 整理一下 the production techniques of the songs I've written. What was I thinking while writing the songs? What interesting techniques did I use? And so on.

IDEA#

At the beginning of September, both Guangdong and Fujian experienced several typhoons in a row, so my plan to return to Fujian from Shenzhen was delayed by a week (I booked four trains and all were canceled, can you believe it?).

I didn't bring my computer with me, so I spent my days listening to music and watching cartoons. During that time, I came across this:

モリモリあつし /uma - Sweet* Witch* Girl*

Unexpectedly, back in middle school, I used to listen to RTTF and really liked this piece, especially the motif at the beginning.

I had been wanting to release a brand new original piece on Heart Dance, and with Halloween coming next month, I decided to write a song inspired by Halloween.

Triple Meter Method Core#

The current mainstream Frenchcore is primarily based on classical and world music, so what HDM genre is more suitable for triple meter than Frenchcore? Of course, the idea of triple meter Frenchcore is not uncommon; in Japan, there's RS's Horizon Blue, and in Europe and America, there's D'ort's Adath, along with many others I haven't mentioned.

Nothing But Requiem - Horizon Blue

D'ort - Adath

So this idea is not entirely unfeasible. I also tried producing triple meter Hardstyle before the New Year, and I've experimented with both speeds of triple meter HDM. I hope everyone making HDM can try rhythms outside of 4/4 time; it's quite interesting.

Due to my hard drive crashing, I can't showcase the project to everyone, so I can only try to recall some details about the project.

Kick&Lead#

For the Kick&Lead combination, I didn't use the more popular small Lead paired with a more aggressive Kick. If you listen to Frenchcore from before 2016, you'll find that the Kicks back then were much "gentler" compared to now. It's not just Frenchcore; you can see that all HDM genres are starting to pursue fuller frequency ranges, with more high-frequency Kicks. I don't think this is a good phenomenon; if your Kick becomes more aggressive, there's less space left for other elements.

So I chose a slightly more conservative Tail, without adding too much distortion, but I made a Tok that aligns more with modern Frenchcore, so it's not too retro. This way, I leave more space for the Lead and other elements behind it, which helps to bring out that grand feeling.

If you listen closely, you can also notice that the Kicks and Leads in the first and second sections are different. My original idea was to use a more retro Kick in the first section and then a more modern and raw Kick in the second section, but it was too difficult to balance the two, so I gave up.

Others#

Originally, I planned to make this song a vocal version, but in the end, I felt that vocals didn't quite fit the atmosphere.

This was also the first time I completely exported the stems during the mixing stage for mixing and mastering. Although it took more time and effort, it allowed me to address many issues that were difficult to remove during production, and I could fully focus on the mixing.

It seems there's not much more to say. In the future, I will also try various HDM styles on Heart Dance.

Goodbye.
